Blitzing your sandbox

Hamilton, Bermuda

Whatever that means. Hopefully, this issue finds you well. There was some news this past week or so from a couple of the online IDEs I follow/support. Some cool and exciting stuff happening and I wanted to share that with you. Also, I can’t believe it is the end of May. Where does the time go?

Introducing WebContainers: Run Node.js natively in your browser

Today we’re excited to announce WebContainers, a new type of WebAssembly-based operating system that boots instantly and enables Node.js environments to run natively in-browser. This is really cool. Being able to bootstrap a server-based project in your browser and work on it without any local setup. This is definitely the way things ought to be moving… super excited. Even without this, Stackblitz is worth checking out if you want to experiment with various web platforms without the need for local setup.

Announcing CodeSandbox has Acquired Play.js, a Native JavaScript IDE for iOS

We’re super excited to announce that CodeSandbox has acquired play.js! On top of that, we’re making play.js free and integrated with CodeSandbox. This is our first step to mobile-first development. Another exciting step toward ubiquitous development. I experimented last year with creating, developing, and deploying an app on CodeSandbox using just my iPad. It was possible, but I’m thinking that this acquisition will make it that much smoother. Will have to try. Again, they have free plans for personal projects so a great place to experiment or build the next killer app.

Codenvy

Cloud workspaces for development teams. Just to round things out, I figured I would link to Codenvy as well. These guys were acquired by RedHat a while back, not sure what they are up to but according to their site, they do offer a free hosted plan. Plus they have a self-hosted option.
